Over One, Under One
Cut two colours of paper into narrow strips. Lay five strips of one colour side by side to stand in for the lengthwise threads of a sail.
In the field notebook
Thread a strip of the second colour across them, alternating over and under. On the return row, reverse the sequence. Before tightening the paper, look through the gaps. Push the rows closer together and notice how much the surface changes even though the pattern stays the same.
Label the two directions on your sample and keep it beside your sail sketch.
