A Key for Missing Timber

Study of a Viking ship with surviving and reconstructed lines

Choose three marks for a ship drawing: a solid outline, a dashed line and an empty space. Write their meanings on the page before you begin.

In the field notebook

Give a solid outline to the surviving piece shown in your source. Extend a dashed line only where you have an argument for its direction. Where two extensions seem equally plausible, draw both in the margin and write what evidence might help you choose.

The blank areas are worth keeping. They record exactly where the available evidence runs out.
